Security cameras are available in different types depending on the requirement and where it has to be installed. High resolution indoor/outdoor cameras are available that can record a clear footage. Outdoor cameras are generally more strong and durable as it has to withstand harsh weather conditions. Sometimes the cameras are installed inside cases so that they cannot be tampered with and outdoor cameras also need to be waterproof. Night Vision cameras are also available which give a clear picture of the surrounding area.

For homes and perimeter, a dome camera is best suitable as it has a 360 degree viewing angle and the direction of the camera lens is not visible. Rectangular cameras are best for long corridors and galleries. Some cameras also do have the feature to be remotely monitored and controlled.

Wired cameras need a telephone line to send the data from the camera to the recorder whereas wireless systems use 3G/4G network or can also be connected to the WiFi. Wired systems are more vulnerable to damage and can be tampered with but the data transfer through a wire is more secure, reliable and fast. Wireless systems are easier to install but their is a bit low as compared to wired devices.

It totally depends on your requirements as to which system would be perfect for you. It is always easier to install wired systems during the construction of the home while it’s best to install wireless systems in existing homes due to the factor of drilling and passing wires. A third option is that the CCTV cameras can have both wired and wireless connection, wired being the primary mode of connection and a 3G/4G module as a backup.

Video recorders are required to store the recorded footage on your computer’s hard drive, SD card, flash drive or on your network. There are two types of video recorders available, Digital Video Recorders and Network Video Recorders.

A Digital Video Recorder is an electronic device that records video signals from CCTV cameras which can be used for monitoring and it records the video in a digital format and stores it in a storage device. A Network Video Recorder on the other hand uses the network to store the footage instead of a direct connection to a video capture card. The key difference between a Digital Video Recorder and a Network Video Recorder is that a DVR encodes and processes a video itself whereas a video on an NVR is encoded and processed at the camera and then sent to the NVR for storage.

Yes, a CCTV camera when linked to a motion sensor only starts recording the footage if the motion sensor is triggered. These are smart devices and do not need to record 24/7. The camera stays in standby mode normally and this feature saves a lot of storage space.
