Network Video Recorders
Traditionally, CCTV and security camera systems were much complex and costlier, but with the advent of new technologies, these systems have improved tremendously in size, quality and price. With the invention of Digital Video Recorders and Network Video Recorders, recording CCTV footage has become much simpler and reliable and they have replaced the old video tapes. Video recorder are also cost effective as there is no requirement to buy multiple video tapes. These recorders can easily store data on a computer’s hard drive or on your network and can be easily watched online or stored for future purposes. These systems are now widely used at homes, businesses, offices and at various other sectors like health and education.
The type of DVR / NVR that you will need depends on a lot of factors including the number of cameras that you need to install and whether you need the security system for residential or commercial purposes. If you want to install the CCTV cameras in office, school premises or factories, you would need to ensure that you use a high storage capacity and high recording rate Digital Video Recorder. For other small businesses or outlets, a low recording rate is sufficient to meet your requirements. The Al Alarms Team can help you compare the video recording rates to your hard drive storage and can help you choose the right recorder to fulfill your purposes.
The other factors which you need to consider before selecting a right video recorder is your location and access to the suitable infrastructure. With the existing data cabling and your budget, we can help you with the right recorders which would not only fulfill the current needs but can also be easily upgraded for future needs.
There are two types of video recorders available:
Digital Video Recorders (DVR)
A Digital Video Recorder is an electronic device that records video signals from CCTV cameras which can be used for monitoring and documentation purposes. These recorders record video in a digital format and can store it in a hard drive, SD card or flash drive. You can also use your personal computer to store the recorder video. Most of the DVRs are also designed to record audio along with the video footage. Earlier, VCR systems were used for recording, but with the advancement in technology, DVR systems are capable of recording high quality and high frames per second videos. Not only that, it allows you to search the recorder footage by time, date, camera or events. Other advanced features of a DVR is that it allows you to control the video quality and frame rate to manage the storage space and delete the old footages once the disk is full to provide space for new ones. Last but not the least, connecting a Digital Video Recorder to the internet enables you to remotely access the security footage on a computer or a smartphone.
Types of Digital Video Recorders:
Any personal computer can be converted into a DVR by installing the required softwares and hardwares for any operating system including Windows, Mac or other operating systems. The PC-based DVRs convert analog signals to digital signals and can be easily accessed from your computer. They enable you to easily search and view any footage as and when required. These DVRs come in 4, 8, 16 and 32 channel configurations and can be easily expanded by just adding additional DVR cards in your PC.

Standalone or Embedded
Standalone DVR recorders help in real time monitoring of the footage and are more suitable for home security purposes. A keypad or remote can be used to control the recordings. These systems are being used for many years and are less complex and less expensive as compared to PC Based. The standalone DVRs are also available in 4, 8, 16 and 32 channel configurations.
Features of standalone DVRs:
- These are very easy to install and operate because of no drivers to install
- High frames per second recording available at less price
- These systems are reliable and cannot be hacked as they use more stable LInux operation system
- Check the video footage by connecting to a TV output
- They are smaller, do not make noise and are easier to conceal
- They do not require much updates and takes much less storage
- They consume less power
Network VIdeo Recorders (NVR)
A Network Video Recorder is used to record video in a digital format to a hard disk, SD card or a flash drive. It uses the network to store the footage instead of a direct connection to a video capture card. The key difference between a Digital Video Recorder and a Network Video Recorder is that a DVR encodes and processes a video itself whereas a video on an NVR is encoded and processed at the camera and then sent to the NVR for storage. The Network Video Recorder includes a computer with video recording and management software and are generally wireless. They are easy to setup and can be accessed through a web browser and even notifies the user by email if an alarm is triggered.
The major benefits of a Network Video Recorder include flexibility and ease of expansion. Multiple servers can be connected together to create an IP camera system with multiple of cameras. NVR systems can support 16 to 128 cameras and the Video Management Software has many other functions and features.
Features of NVRs:
- Easy to install with a simple user interface
- Can connect to multiple servers and therefore multiple cameras
- Remote access to live footage using a PC or smartphone
- Easy to export video files
- Easy to search the video files by time, date, camera or events
- Alarm based camera recording feature available
